Legislatures and interest groups continue to wrestle over diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (IDEA) programs across the United States. Their political discussions miss the point of the opportunity that IDEA-conscious interventions offer. Institutions need an IDEA approach that has merit beyond race and GPA. You need something that passes the face validity, but also connects with the shared experience and the reported experience of students. Once you have a sense of their experiences, understand how to integrate that into the educational apparatus, which includes program evaluation, explicit curriculum, and implicit curriculum.
The Sociocybernetic Control Model of Education (SCME) is the intervention model. The core issue is to be responsive to the stories represented by the students you serve. Sidenote: in the context of capitalism these stories also become the marketing for your program. Of course, they connect to the shared experience and the sense of safety and community created by storytelling.
Here’s just another intersection of narrative and the organizational value proposition. The narrative is the story of the organization. The story is shaped by how the participants see and experience their lives in the context of the organization. These are the notes from a presentation that structures the problem as an organizational culture change problem with an operational solution grounded in social and emotional learning and structurally connected to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access goals.
Learning Objectives:
1. Review the SCME as an educational structure and implementation model.
2. Integrate a trauma-informed perspective that recognizes varied perspectives without labeling or marginalizing students.
3. Map the organizational and individual mechanisms for IDEA innovation.
